My Definition of Instructional Design
When thinking about my personal definition of Instructional Design I had questions. There are so many different fields that pop up when you use a search engine such as LinkedIn, that don’t necessarily have instructional designer in the posting. After reviewing job postings and class materials I eventually came up with Instructional Design being the field of designing, developing and translating learning materials to a variety of audiences using digital tools.
Technology has become a central role in Instructional Design as many learning materials are developed and delivered using digital tools. Instructional Designers develop materials by aligning with standards and using digital tools such as video, audio, or graphic design to deliver materials that maximize active learning (ISTE, 2024).
Critical key words in my definition are developing, designing, and translating. These are key words in what I feel Instruction Designers do. For me developing is exactly what the word means. The Instructional Designer is taking new/updated information and developing learning materials to meet specific needs. Designing is taking that information and the developed materials and designing an e-learning that can be delivered to a variety of audiences. While translating, is taking information that is required for the learning materials and differentiating it to meet a variety of learning needs.
When developing my definition I didn’t just review the module 3 readings. I also went back and reviewed previous module readings. I looked at job listings and researched Instructional Design on different platforms. My three key words were things that stuck out across all of the readings. From there I simplified it to be less wordy. I tend to like things simple and to the point. I will say that my definition is a work in progress and I am sure will continue to evolve as I learn more over the next modules and courses.
